Evaluation and Treatment Process

Clients are often referred for speech and language services by pediatricians, physicians, prior Word Works clients, local schools and preschools, and the Regional Center of the East Bay.

Once the client or their family has made contact with our staff by phone, we begin the intake process by setting up an initial meeting with one of our speech-language pathologists. An interview regarding family concerns and medical history will be given, and the client will participate in a variety of activities with the speech pathologist. Pediatric evaluations and treatment are often play-based, and language is used in natural settings during age-appropriate activities. Further evaluations and/or treatment options are discussed following the first meeting.

Further assessments often include formal testing, further observations, and contact with other professionals working with the client. Following the thorough evaluation process, results and goals for treatment will be shared with the client and their family.

Clients may be referred to an audiologist, ear-nose-throat specialist (ENT), physical or occupational therapist, and/or developmental pediatrician, should there be significant concerns regarding the clients' behaviors or history.

A diagnosis of speech, language, movement, and/or sensory integration difficulties often coincide with developmental delays, hearing loss or chronic ear infections, cognitive difficulties, or pervasive developmental disorders, including autism.

Overwhelming evidence from research done over the past few decades indicates that even minor speech or other communication problems can severely impact social and academic progress. Early identification and support are essential to maximize personal growth and self-esteem.
